Secure your future and become a Global Citizen

August 16, 2016

Unsettling recent world events such the attempted Turkish coup, French terror attacks, and Brexit have led to a sharp increase in the number of individuals looking to acquire a second or third citizenship in order to reduce their personal and financial exposure to external threats. The need to develop a diverse citizenship portfolio alongside the traditional investment portfolio is being seen as an increasingly important part of the growth and sustainability strategies of wealthy families looking to reduce risk and open up international opportunities in a rapidly changing and uncertain world.
It is against this backdrop that Henley & Partners, the world’s leading global citizenship advisory firm, will host a series of seminars in South Africa next month (September) on the latest international trends and developments in residence and citizenship planning. Over the past 20 years, Henley & Partners has played a pivotal role in assisting governments with the design and implementation of some of the world’s most successful citizenship-by-investment programs, raising more than USD 5 billion in foreign direct investment.

Sandra Woest, Senior Manager at Henley & Partners South Africa, says the purpose of these programs is to enable individuals to acquire citizenship by making an exceptional economic contribution to another country. “Most of the programs are structured to ensure that the investment contributes to the welfare, advancement and economic development of the country to which the investor wishes to belong. Increasingly popular, citizenship-by-investment programs provide a mutually beneficial solution for a growing movement of global citizens and governments seeking to drive economic growth. By offering greater choice, opportunity, freedom and security to talented and wealthy individuals from other countries, governments secure much-needed foreign investment and enrich their own citizenry by attracting people with proven business success, valuable networks and interesting personal experiences,” explains Woest.

The Global Citizenship Seminars will provide up-to-date information and expert advice on how wealthy and talented South Africans can acquire a second or third citizenship through strategic investment. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with leading international experts on the top citizenship-by-investment programs around the world, including those that give individuals and their families the right to live and work anywhere in the European Union and enjoy visa-free travel to many more countries than is possible on a South African passport. The seminars will also provide valuable insights into the Caribbean citizenship-by-investment programs, some of which give successful applicants the ability to travel visa-free to China as well as the opportunity to apply to live and work in the United States through the E-2 Investor Visa.
“For business owners and professionals who hold a passport from a country with limited visa waiver agreements like South Africa, a second citizenship offers enhanced access to the global market. It also gives families more control over their future as the additional settlement rights can provide access to countries with greater political and economic security, as well as educational opportunities,” says Woest. “It’s important to remember that no citizenship-by-investment program requires you to permanently leave your home country. It simply gives you the freedom to travel or relocate without notice should the need arise, and to provide this freedom to your children along with the option to study, live and work in the EU or another country of your choice.”
