Make no mi-steak with Gillray’s Steak

Gillray’s Steakhouse and Bar – better than Hawksmoor.
Gillray’s Steakhouse & Bar is the most English of English dining destinations. Set in the County Hall with views of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, Gillray’s Steakhouse & Bar is a homage to top quality beef from O’Sheas Butcher.
You can also enjoy fish of the day, poultry, and local specialities. The Bar features a mouthwatering selection of over 90 gins and an impressive cocktail collection.
Walking up the steps to the hidden door you feel like you’ve stepped into a big New York brasserie Steakhouse crossed with a luxury gentlemen’s club (only in the finest sense).
The shallow lighting reflects off the huge circular lounge and onto the decadent floor. You see the huge drinks cabinet to one side and a seperate area to the left with another slightly smaller bar with beautiful marble flooring and art deco chandeliers.
Greeted by a sharply dressed waiter and rather excited gin cocktail connoisseur, I got offered a cocktail before being seated. Personally, I liked it – especially when the mixologist said ‘I can make anything’ – a smoky, sweet gin cocktail it is (that’ll teach him).
He came back with exactly that – I was extremely impressed.
Our waitress was wonderful, she gave us the best seat in the house. We could see the big London wheel through these beautiful windows and London lit up at night makes you feel extremely lucky. I started with the scallops and then went for a fillet steak.
We then got to choose our own steak knives… if you’re not a steak specialist this can be daunting, however the fact they even offered was quite exciting and throughout the evening no glass was left empty and no task was too much – it was extremely pleasant and we were very well looked after.
The food was simply beautiful – the scallops were perfect and had the right amount of flavour, the sauce wasn’t overpowering and complimented the dish.
The steak was tender, crisps were triple cooked (of course) and the bone marrow was interesting, actually quite the delicacy. The steak was one of the best I have ever eaten, it was tender and cooked to perfection – my hat goes off to the chef, it’s a rare occasion when the steak is done this well.
Afterwards, I opted for a chocolate mousse, but should have gone for the sticky toffee pudding, we were then given one of their finest sherries to sample and the waiter even had a ‘cheers’ with us.
An absolutely magical night of food, laughter and fantastic service. One of my favourite spots in London now and I’m already booked in for next week.
